What does it take to become a successful costume designer? Like in movies?

Question: I am considering a career in costume design and want to know a little more about it.

Answer: Not being a costume designer myself, I have no idea really, but I would imagine you'd need some background in both fashion design and theater. Fashion design because obviously you're making clothes, and theater because you're creating apparel for theatrical productions. You'd need to know a lot about the history of fashion- you'd need to be able to create costumes that fit the time period of the movie you were designing for. There are many apparently insignificant details that can make-or-break the authenticity of apparel from the 1750s as opposed to the 1770s, for instance. And you'd need a lot of imagination. A good work ethic would come in handy too, because film production involves a lot of working to a tight schedule, and often a tight budget as well. That's all theoretical, but it makes sense to me.
