Is there a way to tell if your jewelry is real gold or costume jewelry? Some kind of test to do at home?

Question: I have lots of old jewelry and do not know if it is 'real' gold or not. I would like to sell the real gold for $900. an ounce if that is what it is still going for! But I don't know how to tell which is which.

Answer: I heard that if you put gold in water overnight that if it is fake it will change color. If you have a respectable jeweler you know in the area they will be able to tell you. They will also do appraisals for free for you so they will be able to tell you exactly how much something is worth.
